Current Web Style

Web design has come a long way and I'm glad to see that within the last couple of years the designs have become more user friendly and simple. Now there are still plenty of sites out there that looks like it was designed in 1996, but I think nowadays web designers are starting to realize that you don't have to have a ton of images to make a web design look good.

Here is a short list of what makes a great web design:

• Simple layout
• Centered orientation
• Design the content, not the page
• 3D effects, used sparingly
• Soft, neutral background colours
• Strong colour, used sparingly
• Cute icons, used sparingly
• Plenty of whitespace
• Nice big text

Designing for Content

During the initial stages of this website, I had to make a decision whether to design for looks or design for content. Although I was tempted to show off my Flash and Photoshop skills on every page, I decided to design for content.

A lot of designers think that web design is about the interface, and that content is what's added on later, or else it's "the client's problem". Designers often argue that the content must be changed to fit the way the site was designed. This only represents the designer's failure. Designing for the content should be the designer's problem and focus, because content is the key to success.

Remember the purpose of design:
To enable communication between the consumer and the content.

Content is what it's all about. It's content that makes a site work, flow and communicate well with the right tone. That makes it the web designer's problem, because effective communication is our problem.

It's our job to maximise a web site's effectiveness and that means understanding how users will interact with a site's content.
